Cheakamus Canyon Trail to get Major
Facelift
Just before the start of this years Cheakamus Challenge
people were asking if there was any chance that some form of Government
would help to re-build the historic Cheakamus Canyon Trail which
has been a fixture of the King of the Classics for close to 25
years.
Over the past 17 years Cheakamus Challenge race
director Grant Lamont has been fighting a one man battle in keeping
the trail alive by doing basic maintenance and brush cutting to
keep the alders at bay.
Also with the construction of the Highway sections
there has been a steady stream of blast rock sent down onto the
trail which has had to be moved each year.
With close to $10,000 in cash and labour being put towards this
important trail from the proceeds of the event word has come down
that there is some help in the near future.
The SLRD and the Sea to Sky Trail have put out tender
for work to be done this year which will be ready in time for
the 2008 Cheakamus Challenge Fall Classic which is scheduled for
Saturday, September 20th 2008.
